Although 1876 was the ‘official’ opening year of the Oriental Hotel, the origin of the ‘Oriental’ side of the Mandarin Oriental can be traced back as early as 1863, when two Americans, Captain Atkins Dyer and William West, opened the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, Siam (now Thailand): however, the original building burnt down only two years later, on 11 June 1865.[2]

However, the history of the ‘Mandarin’ side of the group is comparatively recent: the The Mandarin hotel only opened in 1963, in the Central District of Hong Kong Island. In 1973, The Excelsior Hotel, which continues to use a separate brand today, opened in Causeway Bay.The property was intended and conceptualized as a palace and because of this you find royalty stamped all over. Extreme detailing and care has been insured into all aspects of the resort, starting from the moment you land till you check out. A lot of hard work has been done in ensuring that each room transports the guest to the good old days and the place sparkles with excellence and hospitality.

Each room is drenched in luxury and comfort. A stay in any room even for a small duration of time is an epic to life and every fiber of your being feels more alive than ever. From private swimming pools attached to the rooms, to courtyards, the resort not only offers breathtaking features within the premises but also allows the guests to enjoy the natural landscapes. as possible from local produce (lobster with the giant citrus fruit they call shaddock; jerk shrimp with mango; cashew fruit with rocket). Nelson may have called his posting to Antigua 'infernal', but a week at Hermitage Bay feels pretty close to heaven.

If its rates seem steep, it also has a three-star sister resort, Cocos (00 1 268 460 2626; www.cocoshotel.com; Sea View Cottages from US$270), which represents such good value that most guests keep it a secret. On the west of the island, it has superb views of coast around Lignumvitae Bay and an idyllic beach. The rooms, all with balconies, are plainly furnished (no televisions or air con), and the bathrooms verge on austere. But the setting is perfect, and meals, drinks (including cocktails and wine), snorkelling and kayaks, are included
